From Dutch Harbor in the Aleutians to the north Pole

About
This work is a from a 52-day trip on the USCG icebreaker Healy, as part of the Synoptic Arctic Survey (SAS), a National Research Foundation (NSF) supported research trip. The SAS is a multi-nation cruise-based project with the goal of “providing a unique baseline, which will allow scientists to track climate change and its impacts as they unfold in the Arctic over the coming years, decades and centuries.”
The ice images were made during our five weeks in the pack ice. Most of the images are of young or first year ice: Shuga, Nilas, and Grease Ice. The ice was thinner and there were many “leads,” areas of open water, than expected, even very close to the North Pole.
